The Greek film “Dogtooth”, which is screened on this year’s FEST is definitely the most successful Greek movie of 2009. More than ten years after Theo Angelopoulos grabbed the Golden Palm for “Eternity and one Day” in 1998, a Greek film won an award in Cannes. What’s the opinion about that of Michelle Veli, the lead actress in the film?
We are all of course very happy when we win an award, especially at such a great festival such as Cannes. This opens many doors and contacts, but this is not all. Greek films are shown worldwide and definitely in all Europe. Everyone knows Angelopoulos of course, but there are other directors of his generations. The generation between Angelopoulos’ and this new generation of directors making films today, “fresh blood” I would called them, people between 30 and 35, were not that successful, because their films are quite introverted, depicting their own problems and not well suited for an international audience. We had the new film of Anghelos Francis at this year’s Rotterdam Festival and which is going to Hong Kong. Then there was also the film “Platonos Academy”, which has won the award in Locarno. If the recent success would make the state to adopt the new law on film and to support cinema in Greece more, people will know about Greek film.
