Program

Prof. Laura Sommerfeld is part of a small delegation of scientists sent to Bolivia by the UNO to investigate the manmade environmental catastrophe surrounding the ever-expanding Diablo Blanco salt desert. Having arrived at their destination, Laura and her team are immediately abducted by the villainous CEO of a large company held responsible for the ecological disaster. Shortly afterwards, their kidnapper, who introduces himself as Mr. Riley, dumps Laura in the middle of the barren landscape. Equipped with nothing but the absolute minimum needed to survive, she finds herself alone in this hostile environment – until Riley returns with news of volcano that begins to show signs of erupting.

WERNER HERZOG

Werner Herzog (1942) is considered one of the greatest figures of the New German Cinema, along with Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Margarethe von Trotta, Volker Schlöndorff, Werner Schröter, and Wim Wenders.

He made his first short film in 1961 at the age of 19. He studied history, literature and theater, but hasn't finished it. Since then he has produced, written, and directed more than fifty films, published more than a dozen books of prose, and directed as many operas.

His treatment of subjects has been characterized as Wagnerian in its scope, and Fitzcarraldo (1982) and his later film Invincible (2001) are directly inspired by opera, or operatic themes. He never uses storyboards and often improvises large parts of the script. Herzog has won numerous national and international awards for his films.

His first major award was the Silver Bear Extraordinary Prize of the Jury for his first feature film Signs of Life (1968) at the Berlin Festival. In 1975, his movie The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser won the Grand Prix Spécial du Jury at the Cannes Festival. Most notably, Herzog won Best Director Award for Fitzcarraldo at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival and a FIPRESCI Prize at the Venice Film Festival for The Wild Blue Yonder (2005). He received an Academy Award nomination for Encounters at the End of the World (2007) in the Best Feature Documentary category.
