Gabriel Abrantes was born in North Carolina, United States, in 1984. His short films have premiered at the Berlinale, Locarno Film Festival, the Venice Biennial, and the Toronto International Film Festival. They have been distinguished with a number of awards. He currently lives and works in Lisbon.

Daniel Schmidt is born in New Haven, CT, USA in 1984. He earned his BFA in Film at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. His films have screened around the world including premiers at the Venice Biennale, Rotterdam Film Festival and the Berlinale.

They realise together Diamantino, presented in competition at the 57th Semaine de la Critique.

Diamantino has topical range that is humorously vast, touching on everything from Brexit to the ongoing refugee crises to consumerism to genetic science and gender modification. But it’s the media and its debilitating effects on consumer and celebrity identity alike that receives the most thorough critique.

Jordan Cronk, Film Comment

What makes Diamantino such a gem is that it is not only a completely wacky story filled with the most improbable B-movie tropes, wicked sight gags and a constant barrage of unexpected twists and turns. … it’s a Trojan Horse of a movie, smuggling in big ideas on the backs of gigantic poodles in fluffy pink clouds...
