What if you should come to know the world’s end is just a few hours away? Like every year, a group of old friends celebrates a birthday in a seaside villa. When they get the news, the time dividing them from the possible end seems to change its flow and suddenly feels fast yet endless. This summer night will transform their lives.

Liliana Cavani (Carpi, 1933) holds a degree in Classical Studies from Bologna University and a diploma from the Experimental Cinematography Center in Rome. In 1962 she started directing relevant documentaries, including Philippe Pétain: trial in Vichy (1965) for which she won a Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for documentary. Her first feature Francis of Assisi (1966) was screened at the Venice Film Festival and received a Valladolid Festival award for Best Film. Throughout her career, Cavani portrayed historical figures: one example is Galileo (1968). In 1970, she directed the metaphorical The Year of the Cannibals. She achieved worldwide recognition with the highly provocative The Night Porter (1974). The film follows the relationship between an SS officer and a young prisoner. She directed Beyond Good and Evil (1981) nominated at Cannes, then she was back in Venice with a Beyond the Door (1982) and in Berlinale with The Berlin Affair (1985). New film on Francis of Assisi, starring Mickey Rourke, released in 1989 and screened in Cannes, while her thriller Ripley’s Game (2002), premiered in Venice.
