Among the film hits that should not be missed at the 52nd International Film Festival FEST, from 23 February to 3 March, are the ones already crowned with prestigious awards, as well as those in the race for the American Film Academy Award.
One such film, Alexander Payne's ‘The Holdovers’, which opens the festival, won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy (Paul Giamatti) and Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture(Da'Vine Joy Randolph) and was screened at festivals in Toronto, London, Busan, Tallinn, Thessaloniki, Turin and Marrakesh. ‘The Holdovers’ is this year's Oscar contender in several categories: best picture, actor, supporting actress, original screenplay. The cast in Payne's film, which has been described as ‘a charming, delicately written and sensitively acted comedy’, includes: Paul Giamatti, Dominic Sessa, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Carrie Preston, Brady Hepner, Ian Dolley, Jim Kaplan, Andrew Garman, Michael Provost, Gillian Wigman and others.
The audience will have opportunity to see this film as part of the Gala programme, and in addition to the opening on 23 February at the MTS Hall, the audience will also be able to see it on 24 February (MTS Hall, Hall 1, 12 p.m.), at the Cineplexx Galerija cinema on 24 February (Hall 7, 7 p.m.) and in the cinema Cineplexx Ušće on 25 February (Hall 1, 7.30 p.m.).
The French film ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ (Anatomie d'une chute) by Justine Triet, which is shown in the Gala Plus selection, earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actress (Sandra Hüller), but also four other nominations: for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Editing. For this film, Triet won a Golden Globe (Best Foreign Language Film and Best Screenplay) in tandem with Arthur Harari. ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ took home the Cannes Film Festival's Palme d'Or, as well as the European Film Award for Best Film, Best European Director, Best European Actress (Sandra Hüller), Best European Screenwriter and Best European Editor. Jonathan Glazer's film ‘The Zone of Interest’, from the Gala Plus programme, received five Oscar nominations: Best Picture, Best International Feature Film, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound. It won the Grand Prix in Cannes, the FIPRESCI critics' award and the European Film Award for the best sound. It has three Golden Globe nominations: Best Motion Picture - Drama, Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Score. The cast includes: Sandra Hüller, Christian Friedel, Ralph Herforth, Max Beck, Stephanie Petrowitz, Marie Rosa Tietjen, Sascha Maaz and others. The film will be shown on 29 February (MTS Hall, Hall 1, 7.30 p.m.), 1 March (MTS Hall, Hall 1, 12 p.m.), 1 March (Cineplexx Galerija, Hall 7, 7 p.m.), 2 March (Cineplexx Ušće, Hall 1, 7.30 p.m.), 3 March (Cineplexx Galerija, Hall 5, 5 p.m.).
The Italian-Belgian co-production ‘Io capitano’ (Me Captain) directed by Matteo Garrone, will be screened in the FEST Masters selection. This film was nominated for an Oscar in the Best International Feature Film and Best Original Screenplay category. In Venice, it won the award for the best director and the best young actor (Seydou Sarr), while in San Sebastián it received the audience award for the best European film, and it also has two European Film Awards (Best European Film, Best European Director). The film will be shown on 25 February (MTS Hall, Hall 1, 5 p.m.), 26 February (MTS Hall, Hall 1, 9.30 a.m.), 26 February (Cineplexx Galerija, Hall 7, 4.30 p.m.), 27 February (MTS Hall, Hall 6, 2 p.m.) and 28 February (Yugoslav Film Archive, Makavejev Hall, 9 p.m.).
The documentary ‘Four Daughters’ (Les filles d'Olfa), co-produced by France, Tunisia, Germany and Saudi Arabia, directed by Kaouther Ben Hania, has an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Feature Film. It follows the life of Olfa, a Tunisian mother of four daughters, and is part of the Docu FEST selection. The film won the Golden Eye award for the best
documentary film in Cannes, a Special Mention at the Chicago festival, as well as the award for the best documentary film in Philadelphia. The audience will be able to see it at FEST on 24 February (MTS Hall, Hall 6, 9.30 p.m.), 25 February (Belgrade Youth Centre, 12.30 p.m.) and 2 March (Yugoslav Film Archive, Makavejev Hall, 6.30 p.m.).
Artist Hayao Miyazaki will present his animated film ‘The Boy and the Heron’ (Kimitachi wa dô ikiru ka) at FEST, which was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Animated Feature Film category. This film won the BAFTA Award for Best Animated Film, the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film, as well as the Critics’ Choice Award 2024.
